At the center of the enchanting rolling hills, lived a boy named Shepherd. His existence was mostly pure, simple yet virtuous. His main role was essentially to look after his herd of ewes.
Their soft bleating and the whispering of the wind through the lone tree on the hilltop were his only co-dwellers. Day after day, watching over his responsibilities inculcated in him a notion of quiet fulfillment.
However, there were at times moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would long for company. During one such occasion because of sheer monotony, the shepherd boy conceived a troublesome scheme.
Tales of wild beasts preying on sheep had been heard times and again in the village. So, the boy opted to exploit this fear and played a prank on the villagers.
One morning he dashed into the village screaming “Wolf! There is a wolf attacking my sheep!” The terrified villagers rushed up the hills to help but discovered no beast.
The boy laughed at the confusion on their faces. This game laughed for a few more days. But, one noon, a real wolf did come to prey the flock. The shepherd boy raced for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.
Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but could protect read more only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he went back to the town only to be met with a reprimand on honesty and the repercussions of false alarms.
The story of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the significance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the risks of crying wolf. Moreover, it stresses how trust once lost, is difficult to regain. It's a story as pertinent today as it was in the past.
